Separating propylene and propane by rectification is difficult due to the small difference in boiling points of the two components. However, rectification is absolutely necessary, although it requires the use of columns with a high reflux ratio and a large number of trays. The low boiling fraction components can be pre-separated in a separate column using propylene as a refrigerant to cool the reflux condenser, after which the final separation of propane and propylene can be performed in a large column, best divided into two sections, operating at ambient temperature.
